Sipping with the mayor

GRAVENHURST - Mayor Paisley Donaldson is keeping traditions alive again this year, hosting the 28th annual Mayor’s Tea, June 12.
She explained that this year tradition roots a bit deeper as the event will also celebrate music from the big band era.
Popular bandleaders Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey (with singer Frank Sinatra), older brother Jimmy Dorsey, and maybe the most famous of them all, Glenn Miller will get their tribute with music provided by Roxanne St. Pierre’s School of Music.
Doors open at 1 p.m. on June 12 at the Gravenhurst Seniors Centre with the entertainment commencing promptly at 1:30.
Along with the music, there will, of course, be tea with the mayor and members of council. The event is held annually in honour of June being Seniors’ Month.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the seniors in our community to enjoy a complimentary afternoon of entertainment, socialization and fellowship,” Donaldson said. Visitors will be treated to a special, refreshing mock-tail when they arrive as well, she added.
Free coffee, tea and desserts will be served immediately following the entertainment.
“Traditionally, over 150 people attend the Mayor’s Tea,” Donaldson explained. “We are hoping to see a significant crowd attend this year.”
Participants are encouraged to dress to the big band theme and prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed individual attending the event.

Club focusing on controversial books

Delve into forbidden literature at the Bracebridge Public Library. The library’s May book club meeting is centred on banned or challenged books.

Tour the world without leaving town

Seeing the world is as easy as visiting the local public library. “It’s armchair travelling,” said acting chief librarian Caralene Clement. The Gravenhurst Public Library finished its spring travel series with a full house on April 30 viewing a presentation on Costa Rica. Because the series was so well attended, the library is planning a second set this fall.
