Waterloo expert to explore heritage designation

MUSKOKA LAKES - On Sept. 22, Architectural Conservancy of Ontario Muskoka Branch members and the public are invited to attend a presentation by Jean Haalboom, Region of Waterloo councillor, who will discuss the ins and outs of Heritage Designation and Heritage Conservation Districts.
The lecture will take place at the Glen Orchard Community Centre in Muskoka Lakes Township at 4:30 p.m. as part of the Muskoka Branch annual general meeting. The AGM follows a day of heritage consultation, as the branch will host the quarterly meeting of the Provincial Council of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario.
Haalboom serves on the Regional Council of Waterloo. Heritage is a key component of that area’s appeal and the tourism web page highlights that in Waterloo Region “Preservation meets Innovation.” Haalboom is also chair of the Region of Waterloo’s Heritage Planning Advisory Committee, so she well understands the municipal role in heritage conservation.
What she also brings to the council chamber is a wealth of experience as the owner of designated heritage property. Her 1884 home is situated in the Upper Doon Heritage Conservation District in Kitchener. Haalboom has also contributed countless hours as a volunteer organizing heritage tours, community events at historical sites, and working to preserve the oldest remaining public building in Waterloo County — the Gaol and Governor’s House.
Haalboom’s presentation will take place immediately following the branch AGM at 4:30 p.m. at the Glen Orchard Community Centre, 3951 Muskoka Road 169, Glen Orchard. Come and learn about owning property in a Heritage Conservation District and the importance of community history to the Region of Waterloo. Admission is free.
