Finnish Male Singers & Men of the Sound

PARRY SOUND – They have performed separately, but never together.
For the first time, on September 22 at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts, Parry Sound’s Men of the Sound will share the stage with the Finnish Male Singers of Toronto in the Musical Extravaganza III.
Also lending their singing voices to the event are Gail Hakala, Tania Parrish and Aaron Eyre with Between Friends Cabaret.
Produced by Finnish Male Singers chair Tom Ikavalko, the event starts at 3 p.m. with cocktail hour, dinner and dance to follow.
“The Men of the Sound sing one part of (the show) then we (the Finnish Male Singers) have another part of it and then we sing one song together,” said Ikavalko. “Then we have an intermission and then a cabaret with Gail Hakala and her associates.”
Ikavalko said his group’s part of the concert will feature songs all in Finnish and the Men of the Sound’s songs will be in English.
The Finnish Male Singers were formed in 1956 by a group of Finnish tradesmen with a desire to continue the tradition of male choir singing that they had grown up with in Finland.
Director
Under its long-time director Alex Suosmaa, the choir grew, consisting of about 50 singers a decade later. Members of the choir take place in annual Finnish festivals in Canada and the U.S. as well as a number of smaller events.

Club focusing on controversial books

Delve into forbidden literature at the Bracebridge Public Library. The library’s May book club meeting is centred on banned or challenged books.

Tour the world without leaving town

Seeing the world is as easy as visiting the local public library. “It’s armchair travelling,” said acting chief librarian Caralene Clement. The Gravenhurst Public Library finished its spring travel series with a full house on April 30 viewing a presentation on Costa Rica. Because the series was so well attended, the library is planning a second set this fall.
