Canoe and kayak races expanded to include paddleboards

MUSKOKA SUN - Planning is well underway for the second annual Great Muskoka Paddling Experience, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6.
The inaugural paddling event, held last year on the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend, was voted as “Race of the Year” by members of the Ontario Marathon Canoe and Kayak Racing Association.
Organizers are planning to capitalize on the popularity of last year’s event by expanding the categories to include north canoes, classic canoes and stand-up paddleboards, as well as solo and tandem kayaks.
The Muskoka Watershed Council is the proud recipient of funds raised through the event.
“We’re thrilled that the Great Muskoka Paddling Experience attracts people from all over Muskoka and Ontario to enjoy one of Bracebridge’s greatest natural attractions – the Muskoka River,.” said Bracebridge mayor Graydon Smith. “This event takes place at a beautiful time of year and is sure to bring new visitors to our community.” Mayor Smith will be on hand on Oct. 6 as the official starter for both the 10-km and 18-km races.
For spectators, there will be a free shuttle bus to take people from Annie Williams Park, where registration takes place, to downtown Bracebridge and the Farmer’s Market.

Club focusing on controversial books

Delve into forbidden literature at the Bracebridge Public Library. The library’s May book club meeting is centred on banned or challenged books.

Tour the world without leaving town

Seeing the world is as easy as visiting the local public library. “It’s armchair travelling,” said acting chief librarian Caralene Clement. The Gravenhurst Public Library finished its spring travel series with a full house on April 30 viewing a presentation on Costa Rica. Because the series was so well attended, the library is planning a second set this fall.
