Last day to vote for Miss North Ontario

MUSKOKA - Wednesday, May 9 was your last chance to get your online vote in for the People’s Choice award for Miss North Ontario.
Muskoka has two contestants entered in the Sudbury pageant, which will see 43 young ladies compete for 17 awards, including Miss Friendship, Fitness, Miss Scholastic, and of course the coveted Miss North Ontario crown. Representing the District of Muskoka is Miss Muskoka Nicole Manion of Bracebridge, while Gravenhurst has its own entry in Suzanne Hunter as Miss Gravenhurst.
Both girls will be competing in the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant in Sudbury from May 10 to 12. Delegates come from across northern Ontario and attend workshops on self-esteem, public speaking, etiquette, stress relief, choosing a career path and believing in your potential, among others. Competitions within the pageant include public speaking, evening gown and talent. Contestants are also considered as representatives for other national pageants, talent competitions and or model searches/competitions, including Miss Teen Canada World and Miss World Canada.
The Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant prides itself on being more than a beauty pageant, with a focus on the importance of promoting tourism in the north and an emphasis on charitable giving. All candidates are required to raise money for Northern Ontario Families of Children With Cancer by holding a local fundraising event. The top fundraiser is awarded a fast track to a position in the top 15 semifinalists for the competition. Last year the pageant was able to donate a combined $35,000 to the charity.
“A special thanks to all my sponsors, and people who have donated money for the kids with cancer fundraiser,” said Manion. “I want to make sure that people know I am more than grateful to be able to be representing our beautiful cottage country that we call home.”
Those who still wish to donate to Manion’s fundraising efforts can do so by dropping off a cheque addressed to the Northern Ontario Families of Children With Cancer at Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School. All of the money raised locally stays in Muskoka, said Manion.
The winner of the People’s Choice award will be announced at the final gala competition and crowning of the Miss North Ontario, which begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Fraser Auditorium in Laurentian University, Sudbury. The Preliminary Talent Competition will be held Friday, May 11 at 8 p.m. in the same location.

Club focusing on controversial books

Delve into forbidden literature at the Bracebridge Public Library. The library’s May book club meeting is centred on banned or challenged books.

Tour the world without leaving town

Seeing the world is as easy as visiting the local public library. “It’s armchair travelling,” said acting chief librarian Caralene Clement. The Gravenhurst Public Library finished its spring travel series with a full house on April 30 viewing a presentation on Costa Rica. Because the series was so well attended, the library is planning a second set this fall.
