HUNTSVILLE – It is the first student exhibit to be mounted at the Huntsville Art Society’s gallery.
Huntsville High School photography students snapped artistic shots of people, places and things. Their work will hang on the walls of The Art Space gallery all month.
Grade 11 Huntsville High School photography students will present the exhibit, Light, Colour & Reflection, at The Art Space gallery in downtown Huntsville.
Hannah Gathmann is one of the students exhibiting at The Art Space.
“There are so many different things in nature that can be photographed, the possibilities are endless. The thing that I like best about what I do is being able to get outside and explore all the different sceneries and possibilities,” she said.
Susan Higgins, exhibit co-ordinator, said the students have produced some very imaginative work.
“They are people who are budding as visual artists using photography,” said Higgins. “Some of them have quite a fresh perspective on the everyday objects you might see around town.”
The exhibit features a range of imagery based in nature, with an exploration of water, light, reflections and macro photography.
Each student presents a grouping of photos based on a theme. An artist statement provides the viewer with further insight into what the photographer wishes to express with his or her images.
The walls of the gallery are now covered with the students’ photographic images. Content ranges from mist on a thawing lake to dynamic views of train tracks, reflections on water, textural patterns and people.
Angles, depth, contrast and placement all play a role in the work.
Higgins said the art society offered to let the students use the space both to give their work some public exposure and to let the community know what photography students in the school are accomplishing.
“Unless you actually go to the high school, you don’t have a chance to see what the students are up to,” she said. “It’s a chance for the community to see what’s going on at the high school, but at the gallery downtown.”
The public is invited to attend a reception and meet the student artists on Thursday, April 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. The Art Space Gallery is located on Queen Street, across from River Mill Park and is open Thursday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Huntsville Art Society, an incorporated not-for-profit organization, has established The Art Space with hopes that it will lead to the development of a public art gallery in Huntsville.
The mission of The Art Space is to enrich local and regional culture by providing a showcasing forum for local and national artists, providing continuous exposure to the visual arts and encouraging community involvement through outreach, education and service. In addition to exhibitions, the group also offers a wide range of educational activities, and creative experiences for children, teens and adults.
