MAHC needs chance to solve funding: Smith

BRACEBRIDGE - Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith is taking a wait-and-see approach to possible changes to our local hospital services. “I’ve had an opportunity to speak with hospital officials on a very broad level about the challenges they’re facing,” he said about conversations he has had with the board chair and CAO of Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare. Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare stated earlier this month that it is considering a number of changes in the wake of provincial funding reforms. The funding reforms introduced by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care last year switched hospital funding from a formula based on incremental increases to a formula based on patient numbers and procedure types. Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare expects its funding to drop by $423,000 in 2012-13. Funding reductions could lead to a $2.4-million funding gap in the coming fiscal year.
