Skokies claim first-ever title in ladies’ three-pitch series

The boys of summer gave way to the ladies for the first time this year in Gravenhurst with a new three-pitch league introduced.
With the final game played Aug. 27 at the Gull Lake Rotary Park fields, the proud members of the Skokies are now the league’s first champions.
Town program coordinator Judy Vanderveer and fellow recreation staff organized the slow-pitch league this year for the first time and drew out three teams for the season that began in late May. Meant to be a fun introduction to the sport for women 19 and older, with no experience necessary, Skokies team member Cathy Ley said there’s some blossoming talent in town now.
“All the teams played great; (they) started out a little slowly as most of the ladies had never played together before and some had not played ball for a long time, if ever,” Ley said. “By the end of the season you would never know that, we were all well-tuned teams.”
“All the ladies had a great time,” she added.
The three teams were Skokies (as in the town’s winter carnival mascot), Sobey’s and Watt’s Printing, spending their Monday nights on the field.
The league will be brought back next season with hopes of attracting more teams.
Registration information about the league will be in the Spring/Summer Activity Guide which comes out in the first part of March 2013. For more information about the league, contact Vanderveer at 705-687-6774 ext. 22.
