Whitby's Kristina Vaculik, Canada fifth in artistic gymnastics
Team missed out on podium by less than six points
LONDON -- The Canadian women's artistic gymnastics team fell short of a podium finish Wednesday afternoon at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The team, which features three athletes from Ontario, including Whitby's Kristina Vaculik, was impressive through the four rotations at North Greenwich Arena and ended up fifth in the final rankings with a 170.804 score.
The gold medal was won by the United States with a final total of 183.596, followed by Russia with a silver and a score of 178.530, while Romania captured bronze with a total score of 176.414.
Canada was less than six points back of Romania for third and less than four back of China for fourth place. The team entered the final rotation in fifth spot, but was unable to make a move up the overall standings.
Canada's best showing came on the floor where they finished third behind the U.S. and Romania.
Vaculik, meanwhile, competing in her first Olympic Games, sat out the first two rotations before getting into action on the uneven bars where she finished 16th with a total score of 14.166.
Following that she took centre stage on the beam and looked somewhat shaky at times, throughout before a decent finish left her in 20th spot with a score of 13.433.
