Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, of Whitby, and Pickering's Perdita Felicien
were left on the outside looking in once the dust settled at the Trials,
with three spots on the line to compete in the event for Canada at the
Olympic Summer Games in London in July.
Lopes-Schliep, bronze medal winner at Beijing and the owner of the
fastest time coming into Saturday's 100-metre hurdles final at 12.64
seconds, clipped the seventh hurdle and finished sixth, effectively dashing her hopes of attending the London Olympics.
Meanwhile, Felicien suffered a false start in Lane 4, but ran the race
out of protest and finished third in the eight-person field in a time of
12.77, behind race winner Jessica Zelinka, who won in 12.68 seconds,
two days after earning an Olympic berth in the heptathlon after winning
that event at the trials.
Phylicia George finished second in a time of 12.72.
Nikkita Holder, of Pickering, was elevated to third place after
Felicien's disqualification in a time of 12.80 and will be one of three
athletes in the event going to the Olympics.
There is, however, some doubt whether Zelinka will keep her hurdles spot
at the London Olympics, as she may opt to only compete in her
specialty, the heptathlon.
"It's a hard decision," she told the CBC in an interview following the race.
Other GTA athletes who competed in the trials included Justyn Warner of
Markham who won the men's 100 metre final in a time of 10.15 seconds,
beating his brother Ian Warner who finished second. Pickering's Anson
Henry finished sixth in 10.31.
Michelle Theophille-Kinsella finished second in the women's high jump
with a leap of 1.83 metres, which wasn't enough to meet the Olympic
standard for the event.
Matt Hughes of Oshawa finished sixth in the men's 3,000-metre steeplechase in a time of 8:24.87.
