VANCOUVER -- Melanie McCann locked up her berth at the 2012 Olympics by placing fourth in pentathlon at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The native of Clinton, Ont. was a competitive swimmer and ran on her school's cross-country and track team when she was recruited for pentathlon by a coach from Goderich. After learning to fence, shoot and ride, she participated in her first national level pentathlon in 2004 in Guelph, and took home the gold medal.
In search of an Olympic medal, McCann trains six times a week in swimming, five times a week in running, four times a week in shooting, three times a week in fencing and twice a week in riding.
