Strong arms gather in Gravenhurst

GRAVENHURST - Gravenhurst played host to yet another arm-wrestling tournament last weekend, where amateurs and youth gathered to test their strength.
Organized by Joey Costello of the Canadian School of Arm Wrestling and Bracebridge arm-wrestling champion Ashley Maher, the March 9 event drew would-be contenders, both young and old, from as far as Newmarket, Pefferlaw, Seabright, and Hanover. The youngest were only four and five, while adults up to age 60 took part. Lakers Restaurant sponsored the amateur tournament and provided the venue, while the Canadian School of Arm Wrestling sponsored the kids’ classes. The event had been billed as a warm-up for the 2013 Ontario Provincial Arm Wrestling Championships, which will be held at the Gravenhurst Centennial Centre on May 3, 4 and 5.
The sport of arm wrestling is growing in Muskoka, thanks to the newly established Canadian School of Arm Wrestling and the events it brings to the area.
“We have people so impressed with the school that they are considering bringing their kids from over one hour away to attend,” said Maher. “All the students are excelling and finding their style, which is really exciting to watch and be a part of. All their hard work is paying off and it is rewarding.”
Among the 57 entries, a large number of Muskoka arm wrestlers finished in the top spots, said Maher. The complete results are as follows:
