HUNTSVILLE - Traditionally bonspiels were held on frozen lochs in Scotland, where it is held that the game originated. Our bonspiels are luckily held indoors and involve as much fellowship and fun as they do competition.
The women of the Huntsville Curling Club held the second annual Snowdrop Bonspiel Saturday ,March 2. Good weather and dry highways made it easy for teams from south and central Ontario to participate. They were not disappointed with great fast ice, a suburb gourmet meal, wine and prizes. The Comfort Inn and Mark White of Vinoteca Wines were generous in their sponsorship of this event.
Mary Edmonston and her bakers supplied a morning spread of coffee, tea, muffins, breads, yogurt, fruit and moose juice. The women went on the ice all fueled up and ready to curl. At noon, Rachel Peleman, a club member, prepared a delicious dinner. She received a standing ovation from the curlers.
Nadine Austin, Eileen Culhane, Lynne Gale and Liz Allen of the Burlington Golf and Country Club, won the event. The Bradford Curling Club team of Marie Pearson, Anna Royce, Julie Patten and Carmel Kryskow were second and the South River team of Penny Deardon, Jeanne Hagey, Donna Landry and Lynn Prior won the high game prize.
The Huntsville women were extremely generous with their time and energy. Pam Campbell ran a very successful raffle and wine was also given out making sure almost no one went home empty handed.
A special thank you goes to John Furner who took pictures and kept score and to Barry Swan, Roy Sullivan and Don Crawford for creating the great ice. An extra special thanks goes to our decorator Marg Dollard and the Thomas Cook Huntsville Travel Agency who supplied wonderful Italian Posters for our Italian theme.
A few more bonspiels and we will be taking out the ice for the summer. The club is available for rentals in the summer.
