GRAVENHURST - It was a clean sweep for the Temiscaming Titans and the South Muskoka Shield is now out of the Russell Cup running.
The locally based Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League (GMHL) team fell 5-2 in the fourth game of the best-of-seven semifinal series March 15.
The powerhouse Titans entered the playoffs as the top seed and only three regular season losses blemishing their nearly perfect record. Beating the Shield twice in the regular season, the Titans kept their streak alive and kept the Shield out of the win column during the semifinal round.
The first two games of the series were tight contests, both going to overtime, but the last two, both played in Gravenhurst saw the scoreboard swing mightily in favour of the Titans.
In the March 16 game, the Titans mustered an early 4-0 lead before the Shield struck partway through the second period for a 4-1 game. They drew to 4-2 before the Titans salted the game away late in the third 5-2.
Team general manager Gord Carey said he was pleased with his club’s efforts this season in making the semifinal round. He recognized the Titans were playing on fresher legs as the Shield had an extra round of playoffs while the Titans earned a first-round bye, but gave credit to his opposition’s defence and goaltending, which kept the Shield in check.
The Russell Cup final, starting March 21, will now feature two northern teams as the Titans will square off against the Sturgeon Falls Lumberjacks. Those two clubs came into the playoffs as the number 1 and 2 seeds in the league and will now face off in a best-of-seven series.
