BRACEBRIDGE - Despite beating Huntsville rivals earlier this month, a Bracebridge high school volleyball team came up just short of another victory at another regional championship last week.
Players from the Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School senior girls and midget volleyball teams receive their medals after winning the Muskoka Parry Sound Championships earlier this month. Despite losing to Bradford in the Georgian Bay Secondary Schools Association championships last week, senior girls coach Christine Mortimer was exceptionally proud of the girls’ efforts throughout the season.

With just eight players available on their 10-member roster, the Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School senior girls volleyball team fell by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-15 after a tough match last Wednesday, Feb. 22, against Bradford at the Georgian Bay Secondary Schools Association championship in Huntsville.
“Although we were beating them at one point by 13-10, we really didn’t score more than about 15 points each set,” said coach Christine Mortimer. “We stayed with Bradford for the first half of all three sets … but fell short in the end.”
The team was the only one of three volleyball teams at the high school that competed in the Georgian Bay regional event.
Despite the loss, Mortimer was happy with the team’s performance throughout the season. Just one week prior, the Bracebridge team defeated its Huntsville rivals at the Muskoka Parry Sound (MPS) championships in Parry Sound.
As with the Georgian Bay association game, the team went into the MPS match short-handed. One player was away on a trip, and the team captain had come down with a case of pneumonia.
The team received a well-deserved pat on the back on Monday morning during a special awards ceremony at the school. They received their medals together with the midget girls team, who were also MPS champions in their division.
On top of their MPS medals, the midget team also received consolation medals from their participation in the Stacey Barden Memorial tournament earlier this month.
