Annual indoor rowing event gathering steam

GRAVENHURST - Challenge friends, family, strangers, a town councillor or even a world champion.
The fourth annual Muskoka Wharf Indoor Rowing Event is streaking toward its first year as part of the Gravenhurst Winter Carnival and already gloves are being dropped. Created and organized by Severn River Rowing Club co-founders Dianne Barr and Mike Smith, the races typically have been held in March, but are now part of the popular winter festival Feb. 24-26.
“We’re thrilled to be part of the carnival now,” Smith said. “We’re hoping it’ll add a little more flavour to everything that’s going on that weekend.”
On Saturday, Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. several rowing machines will be set up on the second floor of Regatta Steak & Seafood Grille overlooking Lake Muskoka at Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst.
The races are open to any skill level, from beginner to expert. A variety of lengths, from 100 metres to 2,000 m for individuals, will be offered.
Teams of up to six people can take part in a 2,000-m race as well and rowers will switch up every 20 strokes or 250 m in the hunt for the best times.
“Our goal is to grow the sport and there will be a lot of traffic at the carnival so it’s a perfect time (to hold the event),” Smith said.
Rowing has become extremely popular in southern Ontario, he added, “but this (Muskoka region) is such an ideal spot for rowing with all of our lakes, rivers and the beauty.”
Smith said he hopes to see between 35 and 50 participants at the event. Already at least one Gravenhurst councillor has issued a challenge.
Coun. Rosemary King said during the council meeting Jan. 17 she would be taking part in the 1,000-m race against anyone willing to step up to the oars.
Smith added that Severn River Rowing club member and 2010 Men’s B double division World Master champion Brad Ingleton has thrown his cap into the ring.
Registration for the event is already open and forms are available on the club’s website at www.severnriverrowingclub.com. People can also get more information at the site or by calling 705-689-0055.
Smith said the event is being promoted throughout the provincial rowing association, so plenty of talent may be on hand. Even so, he encourages people of all ages and skill sets to give the sport a try.

Watt puts charge in robotics competition

GRAVENHURST - It wasn’t all about grace and speed at the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre last Friday; it was also about form and function, ingenuity and originality. Some 150 elementary students from across the Trillium Lakes District School Board gathered at the Gravenhurst-based heritage centre May 11 to do battle with their minds and the robots that did their bidding. Faced with a theme of forestry this year, the students were challenged to build robots that would assist the forestry industry in cutting, tree removal and harvesting, and land reclamation with as little environmental impact as possible.
