Shield extends win streak to three

GRAVENHURST — The South Muskoka Shield is rebounding from its worst regular season start in its history, notching two wins over the weekend to extend the team’s win streak to three games.
On Friday, Oct. 14, the Shield pummelled the Deseronto Storm 8-1 at Gravenhurst Centennial Centre.
Jumping ahead 4-0 by the end of the first period, the Shield clearly dominated the Storm. Single goals were scored by Jericho Buwalda and Donny Danroth, while new recruit Danny Carter added back-to-back markers in his debut with the team.
Carter, 19, hails from Burlington and has played previously for the Innisfil Lakers and for Stoney Creek in the Golden Horseshoe conference of the Jr. B league. Most recently he suited up for the national Jr. A champions, the Pembroke Lumber Kings.
The defence made it easy for the offence to score, explained Shield head coach Dallyn Telford
“Our focus over the past couple of weeks has been on team defence,” said Telford. “With everyone doing their job in our own end, we eliminated almost all of Deseronto’s offence.”
Brandon Luksa edged the score to 5-0 in the early part of the second frame, while Deseronto took advantage of a penalty to get on the scoreboard with a power-play goal with just over three minutes left.
The Shield also found an edge with the man advantage when Travis White scored to make it 6-1 at the end of the second.
“We have proven to ourselves that playing together inside our blue-line allows us to gain team speed through the neutral zone, therefore, we are entering our opposition’s end with speed as a unit, creating more quality, sustained offence,” Telford said.
South Muskoka continued its scoring spree into the final frame as Donny Danroth and Aaron Turner both found the back of the net, edging the score to 8-1.
Rob Sutherland earned the win in net for the Shield, facing only 10 shots.
The Shield maintained its winning record through the weekend, topping the Lefroy Wave 6-1 in Sunday’s contest at Gravenhurst Centennial Centre.
In the second meeting of the season for these two teams, Lefroy applied heavy pressure on the Shield in the opening period, outplaying the home team for about 10 minutes.
After a scoreless first period, the Shield found its game plan, taking control of play for the final two frames.
Halfway through the second period, the Shield scored two quick goals, credited to Danny Carter and Travis White.
Carter then ended up in the penalty box late in the second period, allowing Lefroy to get on the scoreboard with a power-play goal at 1:28 of the third period.
Back on the ice, Carter dumped the puck to Dylan Sontag who nosed the score to 3-1 just 19 seconds later.
Lefroy just couldn’t keep up and Shield players White, Danroth and Carter netted three more goals.
“Once again, our team defence was spectacular as well as our speed and discipline,” said Telford.
Shield goalie Tanner Swift earned the win in net, making several key saves early in the game to keep it scoreless.
The Shield is on the road this weekend, stopping in Algoma on Thursday, playing in Elliot Lake on Friday and facing the Bradford Rattlers on Sunday.
The team returns to Gravenhurst Centennial Centre on Friday, Oct. 28 to host the Toronto Canada Moose.

Watt puts charge in robotics competition

GRAVENHURST - It wasn’t all about grace and speed at the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre last Friday; it was also about form and function, ingenuity and originality. Some 150 elementary students from across the Trillium Lakes District School Board gathered at the Gravenhurst-based heritage centre May 11 to do battle with their minds and the robots that did their bidding. Faced with a theme of forestry this year, the students were challenged to build robots that would assist the forestry industry in cutting, tree removal and harvesting, and land reclamation with as little environmental impact as possible.
