Senior Hoyas get seson off to a good start

HUNTSVILLE - The Huntsville High School senior girls basketball team is working toward its goal  of again being the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association champions and attend the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament.
The team started its quest in Kingston in the pre-OFSAA tournament early in September and the results were excellent.
They easily defeated the host school from Bayridge, 65-26 in the first game but the second game opponent was much tougher.
They played Notre Dame of Ajax with a Team Canada member on their team, and were defeated 62-23.
They hoped to win the third game against Rideau College early Saturday morning, but the Hoyas were outhustled and outscored 24-49.
But in the final game, Huntsville got its hustle back and defeated an OFSSA powerhouse Regiopolis from Kingston 55-44. The game was extremely close and the hard work and heart of the Hoya squad shone through.
Christie Park was a force offensively all weekend, scoring 20 points in Game 1 and 24 points in Game 4. The team finished in third place in a very tough pre-OFSAA tournament pool.
The Hoyas’ second tournament was at home and they finished with a perfect record of 4-0 to win the Blue and Gold Championship.
They defeated Phillip Pocock early in the round robin, then defeated Orillia District (a perennial rival) and Penetang to finish first in the round robin.
Phillip Pocock finished the round robin in second to qualify for the final but they were easily defeated in the final by the Hoyas. Michelle Murat, one of the co-captains, had a great weekend both offensively and defensively. She scored over 20 points in two games and had a large number of steals in every game.
The Hoyas travelled to St. Thomas in mid-September and had three very tough games. They defeated Brantford Collegiate Institute fairly easily in the first game on Friday and then early Saturday morning they defeated the home school Parkside in a very close, up-tempo game 46-44.
Huntsville played Laurier from London later that afternoon and the game was extremely tough and up-tempo with both teams pressing and fast-breaking throughout.
The London team had a large size advantage and the Hoyas tried to overcome that with hustle and pressure from the entire squad.
Unfortunately, the Hoyas lost the game 44-42 but the effort was outstanding. Murat again led the team offensively and co-captain Maggie Atkins showed outstanding defensive intensity. Keeley Wetlauffer was a force guarding key ball-handlers on the other teams and providing a spark with her outside shooting. Brooke Walker was also an important factor in the improvement in the full-court press.
The Hoyas defeated both Gravenhurst and Bracebridge in the first two league games and entered the holiday weekend with a respectful season record of 10 wins and 3 losses.
The team is very young with only one starter back from last year’s OFSAA quarter-finalists but co-coaches Debi Austin and Ann Murat look forward to the challenge of leading this group through to their goal.
