Rotary ball hockey tournament keeps bouncing through the rain

Playing through the rain? Been there, done that.
The balls kept bouncing throughout the drizzle on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 22, during the Bracebridge Rotary Club’s annual street ball hockey tournament. For organizer Paul Mascarin, the sudden onset of wet weather was nothing new.
“It poured last year,” he said. “Last year (the tournament) was in October.”
Having just celebrated its third year in the community, the tournament is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club and took place in the parking lot of the Rotary Centre for Youth on Wellington Street. Eight teams took part in the tournament this year, one of which had made the trek from Orillia to participate. Fifteen games took place on two makeshift rinks throughout the day.
Last year, the tournament raised about $3,000 for youth in the community. This year, Mascarin said the club hopes to raise about $4,000.
Mascarin had some words of gratitude for those in the community who showed up both to play and to watch.
“I’d just like to thank everybody for supporting Rotary,” he said.
