Massive Terry Fox run sparks new tradition in Bracebridge

Students and staff from three schools converged in the heart of Bracebridge to celebrate the memory of a Canadian hero last week.
About 1,200 students from Monsignor Michael O’Leary Catholic School, Bracebridge Public School and Monck Public School met at the track behind the old Bracebridge high school on Friday, Sept. 21 for this year’s Terry Fox Run. Though the run has been a yearly tradition at all three schools for years, it was the first time that students from all three schools ran together.
“Every year we’ve done one, but we decided to get all together and do one as a community. I just think it’s going to be a nice tradition,” said Ellen Yeo, a teacher at Monck school. “It has been a yearly tradition, all of us have done one but we’ve always been on our own.”
About 100 staff members from all three schools also took part in the run, which featured speeches on Terry Fox from students. Students who took part ranged from kindergarteners to Grade 8.
Yeo said organizers are hoping that by having participants from three schools running together, students will pick up some of the positive attributes Fox showed in his 1980 Marathon of Hope.
“I think it’s good for the teachers and the students to realize that it’s bigger than just a bunch of schools, Terry Fox was about everybody,” said Yeo. “Terry did a lot. He tried really hard and he believed in something and he had a lot of perseverance. He had the spirit of Canada, and if we all had a little of that spirit I think we can go a long way.”
