Plans are almost finalized for the Parry Sound Sectional Colours Tournament, announced Margaret Dittmann at the Parry Sound Bridge Club on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The three day event will take place at the Bobby Orr Community Centre, 7 Mary Street, on Friday, Sept. 21, through Sunday, Sept. 23. This well attended tournament brings many visitors and much revenue to our community.
We wish Margaret all the best for the amount of work it takes to organize a game of this size.
Two guests were introduced and welcomed to the duplicate bridge tables, Nick Kristoffy introduced Gregory Johnson, and Ila Sandwell introduced her guest Myrna Sinclair. We hope that they enjoyed their game.
In continuation to Bob Jarvis’s lesson, ‘In ‘response’ to a strong two club opening bid’, he believes if you feel that your hand is good enough to look for slam, than Cue Bidding will be one of the tools to try. After you are in a game force situation a bid of a new suit is not a help suit game try but an interest in slam and showing at least second round control of a singleton or King doubleton. Some partnerships play this bid as first round control with a void or an Ace.
Here is an Example of a strong 2 Club opening bid with partners responses; 2C – 2D, 2H – 2S, 3S – 4C (Cue bid slam try). Here are the hands; Opener = S:KQ9, H:AKQ94, D:AKQ. C:92. Responder = S:AJ1095, H:J84, D:97632, C:Void. Cuebid is a forcing in a suit in which the bidder cannot wish to play. It is applied to (1) bids in the opponent’s suit at any level; (2) bids to show controls at a high level after a suit has been agreed.
A Mitchell movement was played and after the scores were tallied the winners were as follows:
North/South: First and first overall: John Ducklow – Gail Payne. Second: Bob Jarvis – Ann Szarka. Third: Malkin Howes – Nora Robinson. Fourth: Gay Halpenny – Don Beck. Fifth: Suzanne Ryan – Mel Prideaux.
East/west
East/West: First: Ken Burgoyne – Chris Beck. Second: Ella Spanjer – Gwen Brison. Third: Bob Fedosa – Alex McLachlin. Fourth: Jerry Daley – Isobel Woodhouse. Fifth: Nancy – Fred Lefevre.
