Junior golfers vie for provincial title

Three local junior golfers are heading off to compete at the Ontario Junior Provincial Championships.
Austin Maher and Jeffrey Gardner will be heading off to the under-19 championships the week of July 16. The boys will be among about 144 junior golfers seeking the Ontario Championship.
Erin Thorne, teaching pro at South Muskoka Curling and Golf Club, said the boys are both playing very well and have great confidence.
It’s been a few years since they’ve had any boys in the championship, said Thorne.
Gardner’s qualification was sealed last summer when his performance at various championships and tournaments earned him a spot on Team Ontario.
This is his second year at the championship. Maher qualified after shooting 75 and finishing sixth at the regional qualifier at Blue Mountain.
Two others tried to qualify, but didn’t make it.
Jaylene Holmes-Tang, also a junior golfer from SMCGC, is competing in the girls division this week.
The top competitors at the provincial games will move on the represent the province at the national championships.
