New convention, Rosenkrantz Doubles

Bridge In The Afternoon

The Parry Sound Bridge club met on June 12, and after birthday wishes went out to Tim Sargeant, our out of town visitors, Liz and Peter Campbell were introduced.  Liz and Peter have been friends for 50 years, and love their northern visits to our waterfront property. They had to be dragged kicking and screaming from outside to the bridge games, but they are glad they did because they really enjoyed the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere of our club and its members.
Bob Jarvis introduced a new convention called Rosenkrantz Doubles this week during Chalk Talk. This simple little double is a very precise response bid.  It can only be used when you are the fourth bidder. The bidding would sound something like this.  Opener bids 1 heart, and your partner overcalls with 1 spade.  The opponent on your right supports her partner with a 2 heart bid.  In fourth seat, you are holding at least 3 of partners suit, and 8 plus high card points if vulnerable, or 6 plus if not vulnerable. With RD communication of your holdings is made easy.  A Double will show support and a promise of the spade Ace or King or both.  If you do not have the Ace or King, then you just raise partner by bidding 2 spades.  If the third bidder uses a Negative Double you can use the Redouble card to guarantee the Ace or King, if you do not have either you just bid 2 spades.  If the third seat passes, the RD can not be used, and your response bid of 2 spades does not deny or promise the Ace or King.  These little convention tools makes life at the tables so much easier, so give them a try.
A Mitchell movement was set up and after the final scores were tallied, the results were as follows: East/west:  First and first overall: Gail Payne and John Ducklow; second, Chris Haxell & James Macfie; third, Betty Houle & Don Beck; forth: Louis Pella and Fred Lefevre. North/south: First: Liz & Peter Campbell, second, Bob Jarvis & Jim Szarka; third,  Alex McLachlin & Ruth Ann Miles; forth, Barbara & Timothy Sargeant.
