ORANGEVILLE - Muskoka United played in the York Region Simcoe League Traganitis Cup on Sunday, travelling to Orangeville where they beat the Athletics 1-0 to move out of the Preliminary Round of the competition.
The first-half play was controlled by Muskoka’s midfield; however, Orangeville was able create two good scoring opportunities.  Bracebridge keeper Andrew Warren was up to the task with strong saves in both instances.
Despite holding the majority of possession, and hitting the woodwork twice, United failed to put anything in the Orangeville goal leaving the game scoreless after 45 minutes.
The second half saw Bracebridge’s Andrew Finnegan make several dangerous runs into the attacking half, but it was his perfectly placed free-kick midway through the half that sent Dan Marley in behind the Orangeville defense. Marely coolly slotted the ball past a helpless keeper for the deciding goal of the match.
In the mid-week match, Muskoka United travelled to play Orillia United in their home-opener.
Muskoka’s keeper Warren again made several important saves to keep the team in the game.
The visitors were fortunate to be down by only a goal at the half.
The second half chances were dominated by Muskoka and one finally paid off when Bracebridge’s JP Alfaro floated a cross into the path of a sprinting Jorge Saenz who deftly headed home the tying goal.
Despite the momentum, Orillia would score a late goal giving Muskoka United their first loss of the season 2-1.
The next game for Muskoka United will be played on Sunday, June 17 in the First Round of the Traganitis Cup.
League action for the team doesn’t resume until Tuesday, June 26 when they host Alliston Santos at Gostick Park. Kick-off is 9 p.m.
