Spurred by its success last year, the Ultimate Frisbee League is making a return to Bracebridge in just a few weeks’ time.
Speaking to this newspaper on May 24, Bracebridge recreational programmer Kim Ball said the league is still looking to sign up additional participants for the 2012 season. Games take place on Thursday evenings starting on June 14 between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.
“The teams last year had a lot of fun on the field in a game that provides physical activity, strategy and a great social aspect too,” said Ball. “There are still spaces available on two teams. Players must be at least 18 years of age and can register at the Bracebridge Sportsplex for $30.60 plus tax.”
Ultimate Frisbee is played by two co-ed teams with 14 players each, of which seven are on the field during play. Like in football, points are scored by players through passing the disc to one another, with the goal of landing it in the opposing team’s end zone.
“The league is comprised of four teams that play round-robin style over the course of the summer,” said Ball. “The last few weeks will be a round of playoff games.”
But unlike other sports, Ultimate Frisbee is mostly refereed by the players themselves.
The town decided to introduce the sport last summer after seeing its growing popularity in other municipalities.
