Bracebridge high school students brought home two of three medals won in the Georgian Bay area at the provincial badminton competition.
Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School sent two badminton sets to the senior competition at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations this year — both won medals.
Greta Gostick, teacher liaison at the school, said the sets did well to get that far.
“They did well under that kind of competition for a lot of them being younger,” said Gostick.
Three of the four players were juniors, meaning as Grade 9 and 10 students, they were competing against Grade 11 and 12 students.
Eryn Belanger, Grade 11, and Katie Harris, Grade 9, won fourth in the B pool. Vanessa Dunlop and Dorothy Duck, both Grade 10 students, took first in the C pool.
“We’re looking forward to having all of them back for next year with all of that experience being tucked away,” said Gostick.
The teacher said she doesn’t know what to expect for next year; they may switch up the combinations of people playing.
Gostick said more involvement with coaches who play at the badminton club outside school has “really brought badminton up and coming.”
“Other years we’ve had kids within our teams helping to coach each other,” said Gostick.
She’s hoping next year they will be able to increase the number of sets they take to the tournament to three or four.
