One hundred and twenty-five years in the making, Gravenhurst’s famed steamships finally have come to land on the rolling greens of the Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club in Port Carling.
Presented by the Muskoka Steamship and Historical Society, the first-ever Steamship Classic fundraising golf tournament will be held later this month. Cathy Tait of the historical society said it was an exciting venture to take on, but an important one too, with funds being directed to the RMS Segwun’s restoration fund.
“We want this to be really fun and we’re only able to hold this event because of the (Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country) club’s generous support,” Tait said. “We had to jump at the chance.”
“The Segwun’s looking at some pretty extensive wood work later this year and we need to be prepared,” she added.
The shotgun-start tournament will run Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m., with a picnic lunch provided. Tait said once the last of the duffers is off the greens, the Wenonah II will roll up to the golf club’s docks and escort the participants away on an evening dinner cruise of Lake Rosseau.
“We thought that would be a very nice touch and something a little bit different that we can offer,” Tait said. There will be plenty of prizes and awards announced on the cruise, she added.
The tournament will feature prizes for longest drive, closest to the tee and the hole-in-one. There is room for about 120 participants and Tait said already approximately 75 have registered.
“We’ve got a good start to it so far for a first-time try,” she said.
