Hurricanes bring home bronze from Cambridge
The Huntsville Major Bantam Girls’ team earned a bronze medal at a tournament in Cambridge on Feb. 16.

HUNTSVILLE - The Huntsville Hurricanes Major Bantam Girls won a bronze medal in Cambridge on Feb. 16 after defeating the Cambridge Centaurs 40-33.
The weekend opened for the Canes on Friday night against the Oxford Attack. The girls came out of the blocks strongly scoring an early 11 points.
The Hurricanes’ full-court zone press proved to be too much for their opponents and they maintained a comfortable 11 point lead at half 20-9. The game ended with Huntsville on top 36-19, thus advancing the team to the championship side of the draw.
Scoring for Huntsville came from Joey Currie with 10, Katie Heap with seven and Sarah Holod, Hanna Cartwright and Kyra Meredith each scoring six points.
Urvi Patel also completed the game with two points. Hailey McConnell provided strong defensive pressure to assist with the win.
The Hurricanes faced London in the second game. The first half ended in a 14-14 tie. Despite playing strong all game, the Canes could not quite gain an advantage and were defeated 35-32.
Leading the scoring were Cartwright, Heap and Meredith with eight each. Holod added four. Madi Smrtka and Joey Currie also added two points each.
Emma McAlpine’s pressure on the post played a key role in keeping the game close.
The bronze medal game matched Huntsville against their hosts. With the close loss to London, Huntsville was ready to do battle and determined to come out on top.
After the first half and a comfortable 12 point lead, the Hurricanes were clearly in control. Cambridge did gain some points back and managed to bridge the gap to within seven points, but it was not enough, and thus the game ended 40-33.
Scoring came from Meredith with eight points and Heap with six. Brianna MacKenzie and Smrtka both had four each. Patel and Currie had three each, with McApine, Kelsey Jeffries, McConnell all scoring two points. Shavon Stafford and Hannah Cartwright both played tough defence, contributing to the decisive win.
The next tournament for the Hurricanes will be in Hamilton on March 22.
