The Midget B Gazelles are on a roll! They picked up their fourth championship of the season at the 18th Sudbury Snowflake Challenge this past weekend. Playing with a depleted squad due to some injuries, the Gazelles were able to put in another solid team effort. They opened the tournament Friday night with a 2-0 win over the Chapleau Chicks with goals from Holly Johnson and Selenna Leggett.
On Saturday morning they faced a high flying Timmins team that saw goals on the first and last shot of the game. Timmins opened the scoring just 2 minutes into the game. The game was a see-saw battle until the Gazelles pulled their goalie with just over a minute left. Maddi Aresenault held the blue line and then carried the puck deep into the Timmins end. She finished the play off in style by cutting in front of the net where a mad scramble took place; Aresenault hammered home the tying goal to secure the 1-1 draw with Timmins. On Saturday night the Gazelles trounced the Thessalon Lions 5-0. Megan Hitchcock led the way with two goals and one helper. Holly Johnson, Claudia Schlosser, and Selenna Leggett added a goal each.
The Gazelles faced a feisty Brampton Canadettes team in the final. It was a very physical contest but the speed and the integrity of the Gazelle team proved to be the difference. It was a goaltender duel until Lillian Sebastian opened the scoring when she centered a pass from the sideboards that deflected off a Brampton defender into the net. The Brampton team pulled the goalie with just over a minute left on a face off deep in the Gazelle zone. Off the face off Megan Hitchcock chipped the puck out over the Gazelle blue line and once again her speed was no match for the Brampton defenders as she scored from center on the empty net and clinched the 2-0 victory and the gold for the Gazelles.
The Midget B team is off to Brantford this coming weekend before facing the Clearview Icecats on Friday, March 1 in South River at 7:30 in their quest to reach the provincials in Ottawa.
