GRAVENHURST - Even in the darkest hours of mental illness and depression, know that there is hope within the community.
The Meeting Place Centre for Growth and Healing is hosting its largest fundraiser of the year this coming June 16, spreading their message of hope and healing to the community they support. The organization, founded in 2002, provides financial assistance to support the healing of individuals with limited means who have suffered from trauma and are dealing with mental health challenges, explained member Elaine Robbins of Gravenhurst.
Robbins’ daughter Julie took her own life about 10 years ago at the age of 21 following a long battle with depression. The Meeting Place Centre for Growth and Healing’s fourth annual fundraising dinner and auction will raise funds for the Julie Robbins Memorial Fund that supports the group’s efforts.
The event will be held at the Blue Willow Tea Shop at Muskoka Wharf on June 16, starting at 5 p.m. Owner Sue Barrett is also a member of the organization and opens her doors to the event each year. For $45 participants will enjoy a fantastic meal and take part in a silent auction, supported by dozens of local business owners and service providers.
“It’s a great opportunity for people to support in any way they can,” Robbins said. “Every little bit helps; it all adds up.”
The auction will include a bevy of local art, services by local business owners and items of all kinds.
Robbins added that it is a fun evening for families and supporters to spend together, with no official speeches or fancy dress required.
“We want to keep it light; it’s very casual, almost like a coffee house atmosphere,” she said.
The event is the organization’s main fundraiser of the year and a vital one.
As Robbins explained, “We are a non-profit, this (fundraising) is our sole means of support; we don’t get any government funding.”
Gravenhurst-based Just 8 Jazz Ensemble, directed by George Kadwell, will provide entertainment throughout the evening. People are asked to make reservations so there can be multiple seatings by calling 705-687-2597.
