Britt and Area Fire Department
By now everyone has received the 2012 Fire Safety Information Bulletin in the mail from our Fire Prevention & Education Officer Eilleen Deshevy.  This spells out when you can and cannot burn. As stated in the bulletin they have new fire hazard signs outside the Britt Fire Hall and at the corner of Tramway and Station Roads in Byng Inlet. Check them often as the hazard changes frequently.
To date, starting in April, they firefighters have responded to six fire calls, five medical calls, two community service calls and three motor vehicle collision calls.  
The fire department has purchased new lighting equipment.  The Turbo Flares are red flashing LED lights with red flags for daylight use.  They also have a Prism scene lighting unit that can light up a football field.  These will help greatly toward the safety of the firefighters.
Britt Byng Inlet Community Senior Citizens
The seniors have held their elections for 2012-13 and the executive is as follows:  President Grant Bertrand, first vice-president Janet Lamore, second vice-president Dave Aljoe, secretary Bev Aljoe, assistant secretary Helen Paulin, treasurer Louisa V-Judge, and assistant treasurer Barb Bertrand.  The bazaar held on May 5 was well attended and the seniors wish to thank all who donated and participated.  The main raffle of a lap quilt made by Barb Bertrand was won by June Lavalley.
Britt and Area Recreation
Britt and Area Recreation wish to announce the first annual golf tournament on Saturday, July 7.  This will be a mixed tournament held at the French River Golf Course located off Highway  69 between the Pickerel River and French River.  Tournament starts at 9:30 a.m. with tee-off at 10 a.m.  Cost is $60/person which includes 18 holes of golf, cart and a prime rib dinner.  You must register by July 1. Britt Lions
On May 15 the Lions hosted the annual Senior’s Supper at the Britt Parish Hall.  The numbers were down this year as there were 62 seniors present.  All enjoyed a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings and about 12 games of bingo after dinner.  The Lions were sorry the Seniors Band from Parry Sound could not make it due to sickness. The Lions wish to thank Bill and Laurie Palamar again for donating the monies for the bingo prizes.  Special thanks to the volunteers who prepared the meals.
The Lions presented cheques to the winners of the public speaking contest who gave their speeches to the seniors. The three winners were Hasbana Chaudhary, Anaum Chaudhary and Alexi Veriotes. The school bike rodeo will be held on June 14 this is an annual function held with the help of the OPP and First Nations.

Britt Post Office
I bragged in my former postings about the Christmas decorations at the post office. Well, on May 24 our post office was presented with the award for the Best Decorated Office for 2011.  This covers an area from Midland in the south over to Bracebridge  and up  Highway 11 to Sundridge, and all the offices in-between.  Kudos to Irene Meggett for decorating the office.  They received a plaque and a new microwave oven.
The post office is holding a “show us your talent” event for kids ages four to eight.  Kids have to draw and color Franklin and drop their entries off at the post office by June 15.  Check the bulletin board in the post office for more information.
The community was presented with a gift at the post office of a beautiful wooden bench with planters that appeared Saturday.  Someone was heard saying they hope the old girls don’t carve their initials in it.  We also heard we can thank Dave Belanger and Irene for the gift.
Byngkey Waste Management
Shopping hours are now extended to Wednesday, Saturday and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. My wife just dreads me going to the dump and I usually come home with more than I went with.  But that’s a “man thing”.
Britt and Byng Inlet Anglers Association
Upon coming events: Bass Derby – Saturday, July 21; Kids’ Derby – Sunday,  Aug. 12; and, Pike Derby – Saturday, Aug. 18.
Britt Nursing Station
By now I guess everyone knows Dr. Chris Ibey is retiring from full-time office and hospital practice in June.  Chris has been a member of our community for the last 33 years.  Come out to the nursing station June 6 between noon and 1 p.m. to thank Chris for his dedication.  There will be a table set out with a special cake and goodies.  We had heard that he doesn’t want any big show but let’s give him a big send off.  Bring your cards, gifts or best wishes for a great and dedicated doctor.
Henvey Inlet First Nation
Henvey Inlet First Nation will be hosting the 9th Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow June 16 and June 17.
Grand entry will be Saturday at noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday at noon.

Britt Legion
The Britt Legion will be holding its bazaar on June 2 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Lunch will be available as well as shared games, penny and bake tables.  On Friday, June 2 there will be a Fish Fry from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, July 1 there is a Canada Day barbecue.  For tickets or more info call the Legion 705-383-2961, Tibby Tonello 705-562-6043  or Pat St. Amant 705-383-2946.
April 25 the Legion ladies cooked up local smelts for the OPPA 13 District meeting.  It was nice to have a feed of local smelts again.  This is the first time in a long time I heard of the smelts running in any volume in the area maybe they are on the comeback, one can only hope.
On May 26 the Legion held their elections for this year.  The new executive is as follows:  Past president Arthur Buisson, president Don Gostick, first vice-president Patrick St. Amant, second vice-president Bev Green, third vice-president Don Judge, treasurer Claudette Buisson, and secretary Violet Tonello.   The Executive members are MJ O’Connor, Lynn Barron, Pearl Reemeyer and Trudy Gauthier.  Violet (Tibby) Tonello was awarded a well-deserved lifetime membership for all the years of dedication service and hard work.
