The Muskoka Wildlife Centre received two rescued beavers from British Columbia earlier this year.
The beavers, Sam and Keri, were only in their new beautiful enclosure for a short while when their pond started to shrink.
The extreme heat and lack of rain this summer caused the pond to completely dry up.
The beavers had to be removed from their big space outdoors to a much smaller holding area indoors and have been waiting impatiently for us to get some water back in their pond.
It’s hard for a beaver to be happy without a body of water to swim in and trees to cut down and build with.
The cost of refilling the pond was far too much for the centre to raise in a short period of time and so the Gravenhurst Fire Department came to the rescue.
Normally it would be alarming to see a huge fire truck arriving at the centre, but boy were we happy to see them.
Captain Jason Jongen and firefighter Lukas Chew arrived ready for action.
It only took a couple of minutes for our new friends to get the hoses rolled out and the water flowing.
Our beavers have already been returned to their home and are back in the water where they belong. The Gravenhurst Fire Department has become the honorary sponsor of our two beavers.
