I would like to comment on the limiting of trash bags in 2013.
I think this is a great idea to hopefully get more people to recycle. I run a Bed and Breakfast located on Brunel Road just 7 km south of town and even with guests we often don’t have more than one bag of garbage a week. I wouldn’t even have that much if the composting bins were something everyone could have.
Because we aren’t right in town, we don’t have a bin. I estimate that about 90 per cent of what we throw in the garbage could be composted, but because of bears and other wild animals we can’t use an outside bin like we did before moving to Huntsville.
With a bin and the excellent recycling available in Huntsville, we would be down to one or two small kitchen bags of garbage a week. Why can’t the trucks that pick up compost in the urban areas also be used to pick up in the rural areas, when they are already picking up garbage and recycling? Make composting bins available to all and reduce the allowable bags to one per week and our landfill sites wouldn’t fill up so fast!
Throwing things in the garbage that should be composted also makes the garbage bags weigh more!
