Winter carnival season is here.
It’s a time to get outside and enjoy the snow, ice and cold – well, what little of it there is. This year Ontario is experiencing a warmer than average winter and there aren’t the mile-high snowbanks to contend with or the normal expanse of frozen water for ice fishing.
But, although it’s not the coldest or snowiest winter ever lived through by Parry Sounders, it’s also still not summer weather either. There is still some snow, some iced-over water and enough cold for winter carnivals.
It starts of today with Pointe Au Baril’s Winter Whirl, complete with broomball, skeet shooting and live music.
The fun then moves to Parry Sound with Snowfest on February 10 to 12. There’s the annual bonfire and tobogganing, plus a new snow poker run.
From there the outdoor winter action moves to Seguin for the Dog Sled Mail Run on February 18, with sled-dog races and a pancake breakfast.
Carling is holding a Winter Carnival, also on February 18, with snowmobile speed trials, log sawing and snowshoe races.
A lot of work has gone into these events to lighten up the dreary month of February.
Although it’s not the worst winter we’ve ever had, many of us have spent more time than normal indoors while our winter jackets hang by the door.
Let’s put those jackets on and enjoy what this winter has given us and the efforts of all event organizers.
