Three cheers for McKellar

Carling and McKellar are giving the Regional Economic Development Advisory Committee (REDAC) a test run. So far, representatives of the two townships have attended two of three trial monthly meetings, returning with positive feedback. The third meeting is scheduled for September, after the summer break.
The two township’s haven’t officially joined McDougall, Parry Sound and Seguin as funding partners, but just the fact they are taking a close look at the organization that’s working to improve the region’s economy is a good thing.
This development demonstrates that regional co-operation is alive and well and that can only bring good things to West Parry Sound.
It’s particularly a breath of fresh air that McKellar Township is dipping its toes in. McKellar is the second-last township on the east side of West Parry Sound. With no frontage on Georgian Bay or along the main north-south corridor of newly expanded Highway 400, it has often questioned its link to initiatives that are centred in the Town of Parry Sound and on those two features.
Under the leadership of a new reeve, the township is signalling that it can now see the benefit of joining a regional effort for its own good, and the good of West Parry Sound.
REDAC is more than a line item on a township’s budget stealing money that is always needed for other projects. REDAC is preparing West Parry Sound for a future of varied employment options, a skilled workforce and new business opportunities.
That future would increase township’s revenue with increased businesses taxes and assessments. The township could also save money by working with the region on issues affecting it instead of going it alone. Working together also improves services available for everyone – even if they are based in Parry Sound.
Kudos to REDAC’s founding municipalities for starting the committee and continuing to promote its accomplishments and goals in effort to get the attention of municipal neighbours.
And three cheers to McKellar and Carling Townships for deciding to take a closer look.
We hope you join this worthwhile regional effort.
