Canadore president offers local update

Probus

President Debbie Stivrins opened the 187th Parry Sound Probus Club meeting on August 22, greeting the members and announcing the September birthdays and anniversaries.
Evelyn Smith reported that 43 members were in attendance, along with two guests. Evelyn and President Debbie presented membership pins to Joan Hurd and Vivian Moore.
Mary Jane Zissoff received her 10-year pin.
Shirley Shearer reported on the trip to Henry’s Fish House, noting that it was a rough day on the water but they made the best of it and had a good time.
Betty Whetham took a vote as to the time of day the members wanted the Christmas dinner. Members voted for noontime meal.
More information will be given at future meetings.

Upcoming speakers
Doris Brown advised members of the speakers for upcoming months: September – Habitat for Humanity; October – Parry Sound High School students on Vimy Ridge; and November – Co-ordinator of the Diabetes Association plus two presenters.
Current Past President John Whetham advised of the slate of officers for the following term of October 2012 to September 2013.
Guest speaker for the meeting was George Burton, President and CEO of Canadore College of Applied Arts and Technology.
He has dedicated his life to learning and the teachings of others.
He has a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Arts in Education. He is presently working on obtaining his Ph. D.
He spoke about Canadore College here in Parry Sound and the educational programs available here.
The colleges are focusing on student success, program and excellence and the connection between the program and the community.
The next Probus meeting will be held at the Quality Inn on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m.
