MLA ADVANTAGE - Expanded discount program helps you stock up in Muskoka

MUSKOKA LAKES - As Muskoka residents, cottagers and retailers gear up for summer, the Muskoka Lakes Association is proud to introduce its 2012 Advantage discount program – bigger and better than ever this year.
The wallet-sized Advantage Card being sent to all members provides significant discounts and offers from more than 80 Muskoka retailers, restaurants and service providers. It’s a win-win situation: these businesses are eager to meet new customers, and using the card just a few times a year could more than pay for your MLA membership!
The Advantage program has a deeper purpose as well. The MLA’s mission is to promote the responsible use, enjoyment and conservation of the unique Muskoka environment. Naturally, we focus on protecting our environment, water safety, and responsible development. But we are also devoted to strengthening the local economy.
Muskoka is a challenging location for many businesses, with its long, difficult winters and short (but glorious) summers. The recent recession has had its impact as well; most of us have probably witnessed the closing of beloved local retailers and restaurants throughout the district.
At the MLA we encourage our members to shop locally. Invest in the community that has become your second home. When you “Stock Up in Muskoka,” you support local jobs, contribute to the tax base that finances year-round services, and improve local businesses’ ability to survive, diversify and grow.
We hope the Advantage Card program will introduce you to great new retailers and services that will enhance your Muskoka experience.
We are fortunate in Muskoka to have access to diverse and unique products and services: from locally grown produce, fine butchers, wineries and elegant restaurants to gifts, arts and crafts, and fashions from local artisans. Salons, builders, and automobile, marine and landscaping companies are just a few of the talented service providers who welcome your patronage.
In 2010, its first year, the Advantage program featured 25 participating businesses. Now we are nearing 100, and we will be continuing to add new retail partners. As the list of merchants grows, the more value our members receive.
“I have tremendously enjoyed the MLA discount card which I receive each year with my membership,” says MLA member Tim Burke. “It has so many restaurant and retailer discounts that I find the savings I get from using the discount card more than pay for the MLA membership itself.”
One satisfied retailer is Geordie Newlands of SWS Marine at Wallace Bay. He says that although his initial interest in the program was to support the efforts of the MLA, the added exposure he received through the program produced a definite competitive advantage.
Golf director Mark DeActis of the Windermere Golf and Country Club says his club’s participation in the Advantage program resulted in greater numbers of cottagers visiting the grounds and taking advantage of other services available at the iconic resort.
Through word of mouth, print and social media, and the tireless commitment of MLA president Brain McElwain, who has called on hundreds of local businesses to promote the program, more Muskoka businesses and customers are recognizing the value of “give and take.” Support local providers and they will show their appreciation.
To MLA members, we say, “Stock Up in Muskoka! Use your card wherever you see MLA Advantage Card signage. If you don’t see it, ask.” If retailers say they haven’t heard of the program, please encourage them to contact the MLA office for information. Let them know that you are committed to supporting the local economy.
For a list of participants, visit our website at www.mla.on.ca. Brochures are available at the MLA office at 65 Joseph Street in Port Carling.
