PARRY SOUND - Tim Vancoughnett was born and raised in Parry Sound. For many years Tim has actively participated in our community.

Tim has volunteered with the McKellar Fire Station #2 since he was approximately 25 years old, scrubbing the floors, providing maintenance and crushing pop cans for fundraising.
Tim was always looking for more activities to participate in; and this is when his relationship with Tim McWhirter and his longtime hockey assistant coaching career started. Tim goes to every practice and game and is very much part of the team, either on the ice, in the dressing room or out and about with the whole team. If you go to any of the games and watch the interaction from afar you will see how important Tim is to the local hockey organization.
Tim is a very familiar face within the hockey community, always smiling and carrying around his coffee and greeting every parent and hockey player alike. When hockey is over Tim then moves his assistant coaching duty to baseball with Tim McWhirter and spends his summers on the fields cheering on all local athletes.
When Tim is not being actively involved as part of a team, he also volunteers his time at a Harvest Share. He works twice a week setting and clearing tables, ensuring the coffee machine is always full and running errands if needed.
When you go to either lunch or supper at Harvest Share you will be greeted by Tim’s smile and his love of his work helping those in need.
This past winter Tim also trained very hard in his other passion, cross-country skiing. This year Tim participated in The Sounder. His mother Gail Donnelly ensured this year that Tim raced in the 11 km race, a dream he always wanted to do.
In other years Tim got placed into shorter races since he was not able to communicate which race he was in. Tim raced the 11 km with other men in the 51 to 60 age group and came in first! What an accomplishment!
Another big opportunity was when the local NHL alumni hockey came back to Parry Sound. This year Walter Gretzky was involved and he had asked for Tim along with his peer Tim McWhirter to be assistant coaches with him for the OPP team.
This relationship stemmed from when Tim was inducted into the Bobby Orr Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008 honouring him for his accomplishments as a Special Olympics athlete.
Tim also participated in Many in Motion, Rick Hansen’s 25th Anniversary run which took place in Parry Sound on December 11, 2011. Tim ran the final leg of the race from Huckleberry’s to the Stockey Centre with the 25th anniversary medal around his neck.
Tim was nominated from an unknown source to participate in the relay as one of the “Difference Makers” who have created a more accessible and inclusive world.
