PARRY SOUND - Why sit on a boring chair when you can sit on a work of art?
Some of the nicest chairs in the region will be on display this summer as part of a Georgian Bay Chairs silent auction planned by the Downtown Business Association. The event will see a handful of Muskoka chairs painted by local artists and placed around the Parry Sound area. People will be able to bid on the chairs and take home a very functional, and comfortable, work of art.
Susan Hrycyna, executive administrator with the Downtown Business Association, said they are still looking for a few people who are interested in painting chairs.
“It doesn’t have to be an artist. We have a few regular people who have a bit of artistic talent that want to paint them, and we supply the chair,” Hrycyna said. “We just ask that they supply the paints and the idea. The chairs will be available the middle of March so they will have lots of time to paint them.”
Currently, 21 chairs have been spoken for, but the association is hoping to have 25 painted. Interested artists are encouraged to email Hrycyna at downtown@psdba.ca to get their chair.
The chairs will be on display at a variety of locations from June 21 until August 10. The association is planning on developing a map to let people know where all the chairs are located.
At the end of the auction process, the association is planning to hold a big event that will end in the sale of the chairs.
“We’re going to close off part of the main street and have artists like an Art in the Park kind of thing. We’re going to have all the chairs there set up and that will be the end of the silent auction. People can come and still bid on them then, at the end of the day, it will close and the highest bidder will get the chair,” said Hrycyna.
Money raised from the sale of the chairs will go towards the beautification and revitalization of the downtown Parry Sound area.
