LAKE OF BAYS – Whether you want to try dog sledding, building an igloo or learn how to camp in the winter, Algonquin Outfitters’ annual Winter Fun Day has plenty of activities that are sure to peak your interest on Feb. 9 at its Oxtongue Lake location.
Participants enjoyed trying dog sledding during the AO Winter Fun Day in 2012.

“It gives somebody an opportunity to try something they haven’t done before and even if they’ve done it they can pickup some tips and get better,” said Gord Baker, assistant general manager. “Especially with skiing, some people never take lessons and it can add to the enjoyment of the sport.”
This is the 19th year the store has been hosting the event and each year they try to add something new. This year it’s winter bikes, mountain bikes with fat tires.
“We try to introduce new things from time to time,” said Baker. “This year we’re featuring these new mountain bikes and we have some for people to try out.”
He said one of the best aspects of the event is that most activities are free.
“It’s a chance for people to get interested in a new sport or try something different,” said Baker. “Also for us, our Oxtongue Lake store, people kind of forget we’re out here. And it gets people out toward Algonquin park to see a different part of the region.”
There is a fee for dog sledding, provided by Winterdance Dogsled Tours, and a limited number of spaces, which will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Those interested are encouraged to sign up early.
The festivities begin around 10 a.m. on Feb. 9. For more information visit www.algonquinoutfitters.com/blog.
