17-year-old killed in crash near Killbear

CARLING TWP. - A 17-year-old girl is dead following an evening accident in Killbear Provincial Park Friday night.
Police were called to the scene of the crash at about 10:30 p.m., where an 18-year-old man from Hanmer Ontario was leaving the park in a 2003 Buick Century with five passengers between 17 and 18 years old when he lost control and collided with a tree.
One of the passengers, Claire Louise Philp, of Churchill, Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were also injured. One passenger was taken to the West Parry Sound Health Centre with non-life-threatening injuries. Another was taken to the West Parry Sound Health Centre with major injuries, then air-lifted to a Toronto hospital.
The road to the park was closed for more than eight hours, and Parry Sound Victim Crisis Assistance and Referral Service volunteers were contacted and Killbear Provincial Park trauma counselors assisted.
According to police, speed was a factor in the deadly crash and charges are pending. Police are also asking any witnesses that may have information to call the West Parry Sound OPP at 1-888-310-1122. The OPP has determined that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
