Man dies in Bigwin Island area snowmobile accident

LAKE OF BAYS - Police were called to a Bigwin Island residence at approximately 5 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20 about a missing snowmobiler and an injured one.

Huntsville OPP along with Muskoka Emergency Services and Lake of Bays Fire department attended the residence on Big Win Island.  The injured male, identified as Matthew Deleonardis, 25, of Bolton Ontario, was transported via snow machine rescue, then ambulance to Huntsville District Memorial Hospital with non- life-threatening injuries.

A search of the missing male was conducted and he was soon found just after 7 a.m. not far from Bigwin Island.

Police say it appears the male struck a rock cut and was thrown from his sled. David Stott, 25, of Oakville, Ontario succumbed to his injuries.

Huntsville OPP along with the Central Region Technical Traffic Reconstructionists continues to investigate the cause of the crash. At this point in the investigation it would appear that alcohol was a contributing factor, say police.
