Town, TriMuskoka seeking help to win Ironman Canada bid

HUNTSVILLE - There is a move afoot to bring a prestigious triathlon here for next year. And the community’s help is needed.
Rich Trenholm of Tri Muskoka said that his group, along with town officials, is working to put a last-minute bid together to secure the Ironman Canada race for 2013. The city of Penticton, British Columbia, has hosted the race for the past 30 years, but city officials decided to go with a different race provider for the coming years.
The race started from modest roots in 1983 with a field of 23 competitors and grew exponentially to the 3,000 athletes that took part in recent years.
“It’s a full Ironman race,” Trenholm said. “We were invited to apply for it given our rich history with out Ironman-branded events.”
However, the catch is that the town group must have its bid into the World Triathlon Corporation – owners of the Ironman Canada race – by Monday.
Trenholm hopes the bid, along with community support, will sway WTC officials into awarding the event to north Muskoka.
He is asking residents to log onto http://trimuskoka.com/welcome-to-trimuskoka-2/ironman-canada-muskoka, and cast a vote in support of the bid.
More details on the group’s bid will appear in next week’s Huntsville Forester.
