The fire may be out, but the scar remains

THE MUSKOKAN — The brush fire that blazed across six hectares of Milford Bay on July 24 is out, but the damage it caused will be visible for years to come. Believed, but not proven, to be the result of a careless hiker, the fire caused the evacuation of roughly 50 homes.
Photographs taken from a flyover this week, in a 1946 Piper Cub with pilot Rob Clark, show just how close the flames came to several Milford Bay properties.
The blaze originated near the popular Huckleberry Rock lookout point, a short walk south of Highway 118, but quickly spread throughout the area.
Richard Hayes, fire chief of Muskoka Lakes, said firefighters were attending to the site for three days to extinguish residual hot spots and ensure no flare up occurred.
“We’ve gone back to the site numerous times just to double check and keep on top of it,” said Hayes. “What we don’t want to do is turn our back on it then one of these things pops up, and we’ve got another wicked wildfire on our hands.”
