2011 RECAP — Two elections in 2011

PARRY SOUND-MUSKOKA - Despite a brief surge in the NDP’s popularity, Parry Sound-Muskoka stayed conservative in both the provincial and federal elections this year.
Conservative MP Tony Clement handily won 55.8 per cent of votes in the region to reclaim his seat for a third term during the federal election in May. The landslide victory came despite pre-election polls that showed a rise in popularity for the NDP in the weeks preceding Election Day. NDP candidate Wendy Wilson trailed behind Clement in second place, followed by Liberal candidate Cindy Waters in third place.
Having previously served as the minister of industry, Clement is currently Treasury Board President of Canada and the Minister for FedNor.
Five months after the federal election, local voters re-elected Progressive Conservative MPP Norm Miller to office. Though the Tories weren’t able to unseat Dalton McGuinty’s Liberal government at Queen’s Park, Miller captured the majority of the votes in this riding, leaving the Liberals and the NDP trailing in second and third place respectively.
Miller is currently serving his fourth term in office, and has given up his role as the party’s chief whip of six and a half years.
Miller is now serving as the party’s critic for Northern Development and Mines, a position he previously held for two years in 2000.
