For over three months Joyce Trafford has been working with a team to transform her body and spirit.

Trafford, 78, was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Huntsville Makeover, a project created by dentist Dr. Drew Markham to highlight the emotional benefits of looking and feeling well, while making the community aware of specialized services in town.

As part of the project, Trafford said she would receive dental work, a consultation with a dietitian, new glasses, new clothes, a salon visit and possibly some minor cosmetic surgery. She is also partway through exercise and fitness classes, which include working with a personal trainer.

Trafford’s new look will be revealed at the Downtown Divas Fashion Show on Thursday, Nov. 11. Until then, a video production crew will follow her and document her makeover process.

Trafford is only the second person to be nominated and selected for the project and she said she is very grateful to be a part of it.

“The whole process has been such a privilege,” she said. “I really didn’t realize what fitness would do in my life. I don’t consider myself an elderly woman, though chronologically I am, but it’s made such a difference.”

She said she had a hip replacement two years ago and the fitness process has helped her with her walking and balance.

“My muscles have toned up, I can now bend down to tie my shoes and my whole physical outlook has taken 180 degree change,” she said.

Trafford said she has been in the community for over 50 years and her daughter is sculptor Brenda Wainman Goulet, who created the Tom Thomson statue outside the Civic Centre. Community members nominated Trafford for the makeover.

Dr. Markham’s office said the purpose of the project is wellness, not vanity. It was also based on popular television makeover shows as a way to prove people in Huntsville could receive the same specialized services without having to leave town.
