REDAC to meet Internet companies

The Regional Economic Development Advisory Committee has invited representatives from major Internet service providers to address a lack of service in the area.

The meeting, which takes place this Friday and is closed to the public, will feature speeches from representatives from Bell and Rogers as well as a question-and-answer period.

Council and town staff from the seven area municipalities as well as Member of Parliament Tony Clement are expected to attend.

"We saw how many gaps there were in the area," said REDAC co-ordinator Kirsten LeDrew, about the approximately 400 REDAC high-speed Internet surveys people have responded to since December.

"We thought the best way to do it was to try and get them up here to talk to them.

"This is a massive issue."

High-speed Internet remains a problem for some West Parry Sound residents simply because it's not available to them.

With cable Internet readily available in the town of Parry Sound and limited towers to transmit wireless signals — many residents rely on dial-up or have no Internet at all.

IT workers from municipalities will also ask about the possibility of using 3G networks — traditionally used for blackberries and IPhones — to broadcast Internet signals.

The timing of this meeting is of particular importance, said LeDrew, because the G8 summit is taking place in Huntsville in 2010.

"It just won't be plausible if there's not Internet service here," said LeDrew.

"The goal is definitely to have the entire area serviced afterward."

REDAC was created in 2006 as a joint venture between the Town of Parry Sound and Seguin and McDougall Townships to boost area economic development.
