PARRY SOUND - Smooth roads are winning awards for a Muskoka and Parry Sound-based construction company.
Fowler Construction, provincial paver of the year.
Fowler Construction crews recycling and pulverizing the existing asphalt surface and blending with the existing granular layer.
Fowler Construction took home the Provincial Paver of the Year Award for the second time in the award’s 20-year history.
Each year the Ministry of Transportation presents the award to a contractor whose pavement ranks the highest for a combination of smoothness, appearance, workmanship, innovation and conformance to special testing.
“Fowler Construction's Bracebridge location was presented the Paver of the Year award at the Ontario Road Builders Association (ORBA) convention in Toronto,” said MTO spokesperson Bob Nichols. “They were recognized for their work on Highway 60 from Algonquin Park's west gate westerly 10 kilometers. Fowler was also the recipient of this award in 1999.”
Tom O’Callaghan, the company’s vice-president of estimating, said the award reflects the teamwork of staff at the company.
“We’re pretty proud of Fowler, because it just shows our whole team working together to achieve something pretty special,” he said. “This means that out of the over 2.8 million tons of asphalt placed on the province’s highways, we were chosen as the ‘best in the province.’”
Fowler was presented the award for the 10 kilometers they paved on Highway 60 from Algonquin Park’s west gate to the Oxtongue Bridge.
The company also used an innovative approach to the work. For portions of the stretch, they used a unique approach by recycling the existing asphalt surface by pulverizing and blending it with the existing granular base.
They also used an asphalt mix containing crumb rubber from recycled tires in some of the asphalt.
O’Callaghan said there were 100 people working on the project from start to finish at any given time.
"The ownership and senior management sincerely thank all of our employees for helping achieve this award,” O’Callaghan said. “It truly is a testament of our commitment to teamwork, quality and innovation.”
