33rd annual Art in Park

After 33 years of running Art in the Park on the third weekend in July, Parry Sound Arts and Crafts has learned to be optimistic about the weather.

"If we can get three full days without rain, we're terrific," said spokesperson Lynda Davis, recalling a terrible storm on last year's opening day. "We managed to stay and people came out with their umbrellas and their rain jackets. Because it's only once a year, it's very popular."

Art in Park runs rain or shine this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Market Square Park in downtown Parry Sound. Once held on the steps outside the St. James United Church as a venue for local artists to display their work, the event moved over to the park once it grew too big.

Now, over 80 white tents decorate the lawn in front of the library, each displaying art, photography, jewelry, woodworking and more from local artists. They get more than enough applicants each year and have to turn artists away, to make sure there's a well-rounded variety of mediums.

That ensures "there's usually something there for everybody," said Davis, including food, balloons and face painting for kids.

Admission is free and Art in the Park runs Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
