HUNTSVILLE – With a lineup of some of Canada’s funniest comedians and big hits from south of the border, sore cheeks and boisterous laughs will be had all around during this year’s Comics on the Rocks festival in February.

“The first year it was a huge success,” said Jennifer Montpetit, signature event coordinator with the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce. “We got a lot of people to the area, about 700 or 800 … The whole point of it is to draw people to the community during our shoulder season.”
She said working with Cottage Country Comedy Festival sparked the idea for the event.
“Comedy is a big draw and there isn’t a lot going on this time of year, so we put that together with the idea of a winter activity and that’s how we came up with the idea; winter comedy fun,” said Montpetit.
The big name headlining this year’s festival is well-known funny man Rob Schneider, who’s starred in many films with Adam Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison. In the last couple of years, the Emmy-nominated actor has made a return to stand-up comedy, after a nearly 20-year break, with an international tour and comedy album.
Another star proving to be a big draw for the event is Nikki Payne, who Montpetit describes as one of the top female Canadian comedians of this time.
“We’re having a huge response because of Nikki,” she said.
Payne has won awards for best stand-up newcomer and best female stand-up from the Canadian Comedy Awards.
Other comedians highlighting the festival will be Rob Pue, Ben Miner, Ryan Dennee and Kristeen von Hagen.
While most of the performances will take place in the evening from Feb. 7 to 9, the chamber has organized a Saturday afternoon marquee at River Mill Park from noon until 6 p.m., including stand-up comedy, an ice bar, music and dog sledding.
Building off the event’s success from last year, organizers are hoping to draw over 800 non-residents to the area and eventually grow the event to be as large and successful as the Girlfriends’ Getaway Weekend.
“The idea is for this to grow and next year we’ll be even bigger, with an even bigger headliner and even more going on,” said Montpetit. “There’s no reason why Comics on the Rocks won’t grow. It’s already grown a lot in just one year.”
All events are age of majority.
